||| „Suddenly I saw myself from the back, standing in front of me“ (2023)
New installation by Anke Eckardt

„Suddenly I saw myself from the back, standing in front of me” consists of a sculpture made of Basotect acoustic foam with two listening funnels pointing inwards. The sculpture houses an immaterial audio piece about love and devotion. What do love and devotion mean in our lives? In relation to others and to our environment? To ourselves? Love and devotion find their material and physical translation in the act of listening, which the sculpture demands of its listeners: to bend down, kneel down and listen with their ears pressed to the funnel.

To be heard in this version of the installation: residents of the Villa Massimo in Rome, Italy (2022/23 scholarship holders): Pedro, Charlie, Nike, Ondrej, Muno

The installation was presented at an experimental gallery, the "Kunstbrücke am Wildenbruch", with the new exhibition "Von Urinalen und Ornamenten", curated by Marie-Therese Bruglacher. The exhibtion took place from 1.4.-16.7.2023.

Participating artists:
Elisabetta Benassi, Anke Eckardt, Rem Koolhaas & Patrick Doan, Luzie Meyer, Theo Range, Jonathan Steiger, Steven Warwick

||| New Augmented Reality Installation : „Mirror Neurons“ (2023)

„Mirror Neurons“, the new AR installation by Anke Eckardt, runs on the INKA Augmented Reality App to be found on the App Store.

The installation creates a hyperreal space: An audiovisual, accessible augmented reality layer is superimposed on the analogue public space. The concept of ´Mirror Neurons´ is based on an imaginary north-south axis. Drawn across Europe, a far-reaching political shift to the right began at the ends of this axis in 2022; in Sweden with the abdication of Magdalena Andersson, in Italy with the election of Giorgia Meloni. The virtual work processes these developments in a structure that shows similarities with a neural network.

This project is the outcome of a collaboration between Anke Eckardt and the INKA research group of the HTW - Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft in Berlin. In 2022, Anke Eckardt was a scholarship holder in a mentoring programme based on helping people to help themselves. The two developers Selina Wernike and Dagmar Schürrer accompanied Anke Eckardt in in acquiring the skills to implement this augmented reality installation. A particular challenge was the development of a reactive multi-channel spatial audio environment.

||| Workshop "Ästhetische Erfahrungen mittels AR (Augmented Reality) & AI (Artificial Intelligence)" im Rahmen der Konferenz "Digitalisierungen von Kunst und Welt. Neue Themen für einen kritischen Kunstunterricht."

Ort: Bergische Universität Wuppertal
Datum: 27.08.2022, 9-18h

I have been invited for an exhibition at studioblau in the Saarländisches Künstlerhaus in summer 2022. Therefore I plan to realize a new multimedia installation on the ambivalence of Artificial Intelligence. As a counterpart to AI´s driving forces of economic efficiency I introduce qualitative aspects of inefficency in human collective and creative processes. The installation interweaves analog and digital media in form of visual objects, sound, Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence.

I got selected by the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore for the bangaloREsidency, India 2020. However due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the bangaloREsidency 2020 has been postponed to 2021. In the meantime, again due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the bangaloREsidency 2021 has been cancelled. Dates for the next season to be announced.

The host for this specific residency is the SRISHTI MANIPAL INSTITUTE OF ART, DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY (click link)
in Bangalore.

Together with my partner, the composer Marcus Schmickler, we are comissioned to realise a project on current developments in the field of music streaming in India. Central to this is the artistic examination of non-western forms of cultural conditioning and the way in which this becomes part of everyday culture with the AI-based recommendation systems of Indian providers.

||| Teaching / Artistic Mentoring for CHRONOTOPIA ECHOES (click link)

- a cooperation between KSYME Archive, Goethe-Institut Athen, Athens & Epidaurus Festival and CTM Festival

Chronotopia Echoes / Αντηχήσεις is an artistic lab engaging with the artistic knowledge and ideas of the archive KSYME – the Contemporary Music Research Centre in Athens, founded by architect and composer Iannis Xenakis and Dimitris Papaioannou in 1979. Points of contact between past and current music, sound, and media practices are explored, for instance via re-articulations of pre-modern musical forms and practices and media-archeological research.

Chronotopia Echoes / Αντηχήσεις engages a group of sound artists and composers of electronic or electroacoustic music, selected via open call, who are invited to interact with the vast archives of KSYME under the guidance of Anke Eckardt and Akis Sinos, with the aim to create new works that will be presented in Athens Festival 2021 in Pireos 260.

Together with Thomas Gläser (board member of Inititative Freie Musik Köln), I am currently in the conceptual phase of a symposium, that asks about the status quo of the independent music and art scene in Cologne and beyond. The word "Blaupause / Blueprint" is colloquially synonymous with template, model, draft or concept.

What processes can promote Cologne's artistic future?
How can Cologne's music and art scene be further internationalised?
How do new, creative nuclei emerge?

||| Series of Articles by Anke Eckardt on Artificial Intelligence in Music and Art

As a result of Anke Eckardt's ongoing research on artificial intelligence in music and art, a series of articles has now been published:

Part 1: Early Forms of Artificial Intelligence (AI) (click link)
Part 2: Transformations (click link)
Part 3: How black is the box? (click link)

Artificial intelligence has not only existed since the 2000s. Part 1 is dedicated to early forms of AI, starting with the propagated beginning of cybernetics in 1943 up to the 1980s, when artistic projects in the field of music were realised by means of machine learning.
The second part of this short series of texts on artificial intelligence is dedicated to current major transformations through artificial intelligence from a socio-political perspective on a global scale.
The final part, Part 3, focuses on artificial intelligence in the field of contemporary music and art. Who are the actors and how do they act in dealing with AI? What are the criteria for the qualitative distinction between these works?

Anke Eckardt
The role of the brain in dreaming / Die Rolle des Gehirns beim Träumen   (2019)

kjubh Totale

Exhibition: 29th of March - 28th of April 2019
Invited by Elke Bausch

Anke Eckardt (born 1976 in Dresden) shows five new works at the kjubh Kunstverein, which were created in the examination of theoretical processes of the construction of consciousness and reality. An essential reference is Thomas Metzinger ("Our self does not exist. The consciously experienced ego is only generated by our brain "*). Eckardt is interested in the difference that results from the approaches to the constitution of an ego in cognitive science and various subjective approaches to the perception of the self (especially of women who work with sound as musicians and composers, as well as of visitors).

Several sculptural works offer levels of experience: a large dimensioned acoustic mirror enables individual audiovisual perceptions and creates contrast to a sculpture of chladnic sound figures in which hundreds of grains of sand form dynamic patterns. A collage of narration, resonances and rhythmic passages unfolds in the sound of the exhibition, allowing the various areas of the room to shine through.

Anke Eckardt
HAUT dry/wet   (2018)

MAKK_Dodekaeder

Exhibition: 26th of May - 5th of July 2018
Opening: 25th of May 2018, 7pm Vernissage with Performance
with Jiyun Park and Nils Herzogenrath

HAUT dry/wet makes it possible to perceive the architecture of the MAKK main hall as a sounding body.

In "De re aedificatoria" (ca. 1443 - 1452) Leon Battista Alberti develops the topos that the body of a building is covered by a skin of several layers of plaster, a dress that corresponds to its individual social position. At the beginning of the 20th century, this concept of architecture as representation changed from the ground up; the naked, smooth wall - the skin lying under the clothing - became visible.

Based on this, the Cologne-based artist Anke Eckardt chooses her material for the installations: special loudspeakers in combination with acoustic materials as sculptural objects. A dodecahedron, a spherical loudspeaker, communicates with the surrounding space. Used in acoustic research for measurements, it radiates impulses in 360 degrees, body and skin of the architecture respond with reflections. The construction of space also takes place on the basis of a critical examination of technology. Developed by the American military, extremely directional ultrasonic loudspeakers serve, among other things, the police of various nations for crowd control, the targeted manipulation of demonstrations by means of sound. In the exhibition, power-reduced sonic beams are used indirectly. A central question in Eckardt's work is: Who defines public space and how does space determine social behavior?

HAUT dry/wet combines the opposing principles: acoustic wisp lights overlap with a dialogue between sphere and space, latex and foam cubes reflect and absorb sound. In interaction they activate and transform the space in its aesthetic and social effect and thus define our auditory perception.

The exhibition will be complemented by a performances on 25.05.2018.

|||     VINYLHEADS (2018)
COMISSION FOR AN AUDIOVISUAL INSTALLATION
@ HKW (Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin):

Vinylheads_1

Sounding spaces transformed from record covers: the audiovisual installation consisting of three walk-in sculptures by the artist Anke Eckardt takes record covers by The Winstons, Mantronix and Squarepusher as its starting point. The connecting element between the musical albums is the Amen Break - four bars of drum solo from the piece Amen, Brother by the soul band The Winstons from 1969 in the original and as a sample.

In contrast, various cultural identities are reflected in the sound aesthetics and visual formal language of the records. Formally translated from two-dimensional into three-dimensional space, the sculptures of the audiovisual installation are made to vibrate by transducers. Beyond high fidelity, the material acts as a loudspeaker and filter of the spectrally processed original audio tracks:

A vinyl head creates resonances.

With its annual exhibition, the CTM Festival explores the possibilities and limits of music and sound, and their interference with contemporary art. The 2015 exhibition sounds out various threads connected to the festival theme Un Tune. Artistic experimentation with the affective and somatic effects of sounds and frequencies opens up possibilities of tuning and de-tuning the composite that interconnects body, matter, energy and machines, but also of atmospheres, spaces, communication and situations. "Un Tune" also serves as an overarching metaphor that refers to the potentials that might be unlocked by temporarily destabilizing our hatibual and consensual states.

GROUND press foto

The GROUND is in motion. Thus it will move the visitors which stand on it. The motion of the ground can be felt via the equilibrium sense (sense of balance), can be seen and can be heard. The grinding, sanding, pushing, bouncing, vibrating, creaking of the mechanically moved material will produce a varity of tonal qualities with diverse roughness and awakes associations of earth quakes, tectonical plates in motion, but also of the diffuse experience of loosing the ground. In 1934 Husserl wrote about the ground as reference for the perception of space and the perception of self, ‘Now, when I “conceive” the earth as a moved body, I use a ground to which all experience of bodies, and hence all experience of continuing to be at rest and in motion, is related.’ (Husserl, 1934). Vilem Flusser as an emigrated jew wrote about a hovering self over the abysm in his auto-biography 'Bodenlos’ (‘Groundless’). In his book 'Vampyrotheutis Infernalis' Flusser analyses the floating 'otherness' of a huge octopus in the deep sea and draws a line to the psychology of human beings.

|||     INSTALLATIONS ‘STALKER 1 ’ AND ‘STALKER 2’ BY ANKE ECKARDT AT THE 'EVIL MUSIC' FESTIVAL AT HKW, BERLIN (click link).

Dates for the Exhibition: 24 - 27 of October 2013, opening on 24 October at 7.30pm
Place: House of World Cultures, Berlin
Panel on the theme of ‘Evil Music’: In addition, I will take part in a panel together with Steve Goodman (author of ‘Sonic Warfare’, musician) and moderator Holger Schulze on Saturday 26th of October at 7pm at House of World Cultures, Berlin.

‘Stalker 1’ is a collection of Youtube-videos and documents the application of ultrasonic (hypersonic) loud-speakers in public space. Therefore a smaller ultrasonic loudspeakers is used. The speakers’ extremely vectored output – namely at a radiation angle of three degrees – is compared often to a pocket lamp’s light cone. With the aid of hypersonic speakers it is possible, even over a considerable distance, to expose target individuals or small groups of people to an onslaught of sound. Prolonged exposure to these Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRADs) can cause nausea, severe headaches and disorientation yet they are considered still as non-lethal weapons. Both the military and the police deploy hypersonic speakers internationally as a means of crowd control, for example in Senegal in January 2012 and at the Anti-G20 protests in Pittsburgh in 2009. A police officer quoted by The Washington Times said, ‘[An LRAD] is designed to get people to do what police want. It makes them uncomfortable but does not hurt them’.

The sound installation ‘Stalker 2’ is an unknown auditive zone in the entrance area of the House of World Cultures in Berlin. “… what it was? The fall of a meteorite? The visit of inhabitants of the human cosmos? We directly sended troops there. They did not come back … for the rest – I don´t know, I don´t know … From an interview with the Nobel prize winner professor Wallace with a correspondent of the RAI” (in 'Stalker' by Andrej Tarkovsky). Seven years later the catastrophe of Tschernobyl represented a dramatic analogy to this fiction. The whole surrounding became depopulated (officially called 'zone of alienation'). Some of the workers, who took care of the abandoned power station called themselves 'stalkers'. At the House of World Cultures an ultrasonic sound beam creates an unknown auditive ‘zone’. For that matter a kinetically moved, large parabolic mirror (that reminds on radar units, oldschool and science fiction at the same time) is transformed into a reflector; it becomes a voice.

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Lucht, Physiker, Nachhaltigkeitswissenschaftler, Forschungsfeld Erdsystemanalyse

IN DER ZEITSCHRIFT FÜR SEMIOTIK, DOPPELHEFT IM JAHR 2013 MIT DEM THEMENSCHWERPUNKT "SITUATION UND KLANG - ZU SEMIOTISCHEN ANSÄTZEN IN DER KULTUR- UND MEDIENWISSENSCHAFT DES KLANGS" (click link).

Summary "Verticality and Power. Three studies of listening: 1945 - 1965 - 2012": The author undertakes basic research on the relation between the structures of use in regards to vertical space and the means of representation and performativity of power. From the perspective of cultural history and especially from a historical anthropology of sound she concentrates not just on sonic and physical aspects but furthermore on the psychological and political dimensions of listening. For the analysis she applies a set of categories to approach the actual sounds as well as the hearing experience in its physical as well as its semiotic dimension. She analyses situations of vertical hearing by means of three historical and contemporary case studies: 1965 when the governments of the GDR and the USSR sent fighter jets over the Berliner Kongresshalle in Western Berlin; 1945 when soviet soldiers performed a triumphant ritual on the roof of the Berlin Reichstag; and 2012 when the Berlin police undertook a helicopter operation over Berlin-Kreuzberg on May 1st.

Ein Workshop mit Anke Eckardt

Datum: Fr/Sa 14./15.12. 2012, jeweils 10-13h und14-17h
Ort: Medienhaus, Grunewaldstrasse 2-5, Raum 111

"You sign on for a ride you probably think you got at least some notion of where the ride´s goin. But you might not. " (from Cormac Mc Carthy: "No Country for Old Men")
The past is resonating, the foundation of the present unstable, the stairway to the future uncertain. Parts of the existing granite staircase of the Amerika Haus are transformed. The intertwining of swinging springs, vibrating infrasound transducers and a segmented projection of a visual structure onto itself enables the perception of an unstable ground. The physical experience develops only when visitors stand on the installation.

|||   CONTRIBUTION (click link)   TO THE 'SOUNDWORKS' EXHIBITION @ the
ICA - INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS, LONDON (click link).

One hundred new sound works have been produced by artists from all over the world. Selected by our curators and art institutions worldwide, the artists have been invited to submit a sound work, taking its stimulus from themes evoked in Bruce Nauman's Days, presented concurrently in the lower gallery, as part of our season on sound.

My contribution is CLOCKWORK: BROKEN by Anke Eckardt & Henry Koch.
CLOCKWORK : BROKEN is a short, concise composition following the theme of an old clockwork that decicively structures time whilst getting messed up with clouds of memories of its own sound material. Acoustically, CLOCKWORK : BROKEN consists of glass, all the sound material was recorded by the artists themselves. With an axe they systematically cut Christmas tree balls as well as mirrors and the complete stock of glasses from a former restaurant. Using three directional microphones they recorded the breaking, fall and impact of the glas on the ground.

       CYNETART FESTIVAL 2011 (click link).

‘BETWEEN | You | AND | ME’ (multi-sensory installation by Anke Eckardt, 2011) is a wall of light and sound. The enhanced version was presented for the first time.

The 15th edition of the CYNETART festival for computer-based art is very much characterised by the essence of the Festspielhaus Hellerau that opened 100 years ago. Between November 16th and 26th 2011 the building designed by Heinrich Tessenow especially for the proclaimed “Body Liberation“ movement will be transformed into a space laboratory where cultural, artistic and academic as well as technological dimensions of contemporary and future body perception can be experienced. Visitors are invited to explore various experimental setups at the interface between naturalness and artificiality and thus to experience their corporeality in new and different ways.
